How is competency in a course determined?

The College of Dental Medicine’s (CODM’s) ’mastery learning model embraces a criteria-based educational philosophy. Subjects are taught in immersion blocks of varying lengths. Students usually participate in one didactic and one hand skills/clinical block at a time. We require students to achieve a score of 90% to pass each didactic block.


Criterion-based Learning


Pass/No Pass:
Roseman CODM requires students to achieve a score of 90% or greater to “pass” (“P” on the transcript) each didactic block“”. Assessments occurring throughout the block enable faculty to intervene at the time assistance is needed. Assessment scores are never averaged or lowered, and student dentists are not graded on a curve. They must meet the criteria specified by the faculty for each competency. Student performance is assessed relative to the criteria—not relative to the performance of other students.


Didactic Blocks:
Each student must pass all assessments during the block and achieve a score of 90% or greater on each. If a student does not meet the minimum passing score of 90%, he or she engages in a focused remediation with faculty and is reassessed, usually within a week, using different questions.


Preclinical Blocks:
A score of 90% is required to achieve a Pass grade in preclinical simulation courses. A Pass represents acceptable, criteria-based performance appropriate to specific developmental levels.


Clinical Blocks:
To pass a clinical course, students demonstrate their ability to independently perform clinically acceptable procedures that are consistent with their developmentally appropriate level, manage patient visits effectively and exhibit professionalism in interactions with patients, faculty, staff and other students. The final, global evaluation of the student’s performance reflects cumulative daily evaluations by individual clinical faculty, as well as overall assessments by the Clinical Practice Team Leader.

We provide both Pass and Military evaluations. 


What else should program directors know?

Assessments occur frequently to enable faculty to intervene at the time assistance is needed. Each student must achieve a score of 90% or greater on all assessments within the block. If a student does not meet the minimum passing score of 90%, within a week she/he must engage in a half-day, focused remediation session with faculty and is reassessed using different questions. Those who do not pass the in-course remediation participate in a week-long, focused summer session on the subject and are re-assessed. Students who do not reach the 90% passing level must repeat the course, repeat the year or be dismissed. Assessments are never averaged, lowered or graded on a curve.  Student performance is assessed relative to the criteria and not to the performance of other students.
